Move4Health
Salsa in the Park is brought to you by MetaMovements, the Blackstone Community Center and the city of Boston, bringing you free, outdoor salsa dancing and education to city youth, the South End community and Boston-area salseros.
Move4Health
This year Salsa in the Park is partnering with the City of Cambridge’s Mayor’s program and MetaMovements’s Move4Health program, which provides high school students opportunities to change their communities through healthy activity, such as exercise through dance, nutrition and environmentalism. Be sure to stop by these students’ booths during the event!
This six-week summer project provides Cambridge teens with jobs working in community health promotion. A team of over ten high school students have been put into three groups focusing on advocacy through nutrition education, community improvement through environmental betterment and healthy social engagement through dance. These students provide education for all ages through presentations and games. Move4Health is at Salsa in the Park every week, as well as at other youth camps and senior centers.
Salsa in the Park has also partnered with Kerry Thompson, a Boston salsero who has been teaching and performing for the past three years. Kerry has developed the Silent Rhthmys program, providing free salsa lessons to the deaf and hearing impaired. Anyone who is interested in more information on this program should contact MetaMovements at metamovementsdance@gmail.com
Salsa in the Park
Each week through August we provide free outdoor dancing, free lessons and a family-friendly atmosphere. With the financial support of the Boston R.O.C.K.S. grant and the continued support of Boston Dance Alliance, SalsaBoston.com, DJ Hernan and the Blackstone Community Center we are able to bring you Salsa in the Park, which over the past three years has decreased crime in the area, provided dozens of youth jobs through the summer and has improved community cohesiveness. However, each year we only receive half the funds we need to keep the program alive. Please consider making a donation at the event or below.
In addition, each weekly event could not be possible without the hard work of our volunteers. Please consider donating your time at our next event and be sure to thank the staff and volunteers you see for helping make this program possible.
